Smashburger, a franchise of seared hamburgers, will open an Arizona eatery this week on in Tempe.
Best known in Colorado, the chain is expected to expand across the Phoenix area, as the Denver-based company works on deals with franchise operators across the state. That includes SunWest Burgers LLC Restaurant Concepts, which plans to open 30 stores across Maricopa County in the next six years. SunWest will operate the Mill Avenue restaurant.
SunWest Burgers is a subsidiary of SunWest Restaurant Concepts, which also operates Jerrys and six Black Bear Diner brands across in the area. The firm is operated by principal David Doty, whose father, Edward, purchased the Jerrys concept in the 1980s.
Smashburger is a fast-casual restaurant concept that offers seared Angus beef burgers in one-third and half-pound sizes on artisan-style, butter-toasted egg buns. Burgers range in price from $5 to $7. The restaurants also feature salads and hot dogs, Haagen-Dazs ice cream shakes and root-beer floats. Customers place their orders at the counter, and meals are delivered to their tables.
The restaurant will feature the Arizona Burger and Devil Dog, created specifically for the local customers.
The restaurant will open Wednesday and is located at 777 S. College Ave. at College and University in downtown Tempe.
