I just can’t stop singing praise for SmashBurger because they truly have the BEST burgers, sides, et al anywhere … truly. As of today, there’s a new SmashBurger location open in Boulder, Colorado, at the 29th Street Mall.
The company V.I.Peeps held a Smashburger Sneak Peek Party on Tuesday, March 9, where guests who won invites were treated to any of the great offerings on the menu, along with extra samples of Smashsides and Haagen-Dazs shakes.
So, how do you come up with an idea for a burger joint that’s new and refreshing? Just ask SmashBurger Founder Tom Ryan …
“We felt the ‘big guys’ had lost focus, and we could do it better, faster and cooler,” he said. “We wanted things modern and lively.”
Of course, fantastic food is a necessary part of the formula. SmashBurgers are made from 100 percent Angus beef. They’re named for the cooking method used to create them: one-third or half-pound balls of fresh beef – not frozen – are smashed on a flat grill to sear in superior juicy flavor. It’s slightly more complicated than that, according to Ryan – the metal-to-metal method sears the beef and creates a carmelized layer.
The Colorado menu features specially crafted Colorado items, as well as a Boulder-exclusive Black Bean SmashBurger for the local veggie-minded population. I opted for the Colorado SmashBurger – Angus beef smashed and seared, topped with grilled fresh green chilies, melted cheddar and pepper jack cheeses, lettuce, tomato and mayo on a chipotle bun.
WOW! It had just the right modest amount of ZING. Without the ka-ching, by the way, since the products are also modestly priced.
Peruse the online menus for different states. SmashBurger has crafted special burgers and sides for different locales: an Arizona SmashBurger, Buckeye SmashBurger in Ohio, New Jersey SmashBurger and Twin Cities Burger in Minnesota, just to name a few. In fact, the Twin Cities Burger was the highest-scoring in a taste survey done by Mpls. St. Paul Magazine in August 2009.
Ryan and his colleagues at Denver-based Consumer Capital Partners (CCP) are well-versed in their new fast-casual restaurant biz. Ryan worked previously as McDonald’s Worldwide Chief of Concept Development. CCP is working hard to build every city’s favorite burger place. They have sold franchise agreements that will total more than 275 locations over the next five years. The corporate, joint venture and franchise development deals are part of SmashBurger’s plan to open 500-plus restaurants across the country.
That’s not including other future plans Ryan alluded to … top secret stuff which he could not reveal. He said he’d have to kill me if he did.
“As a Denver-based company, we are excited to spread our burger magic across the state and into Boulder,” said Ryan.
Keep the food coming …
We were also treated to a special Colorado-inspired Smashside: Fried Green Chilies served with spicy chipotle sauce. Good stuff. Crispy. Flavorful.
My husband, Bob, was especially hungry for more. He was served a Colorado SmashDog – a 100 percent Angus beef hotdog topped with grilled fresh chilies, grilled onions, melted cheddar and pepper jack cheeses, chipotle sauce and fresh-sliced tomatoes. Yowza!
The first time I walked through the doors of a SmashBurger restaurant – in Fort Collins, CO – I was nearly knocked over by the fantastic aroma of searing Angus beef, and tender Smashfries tossed with rosemary, olive oil and garlic. OMG – the fries!
They lured me with the olfactory senses. After I ate the SmashBurger, I was hooked.
