Scott and Mary Quigley will open the area’s first Smashburger restaurant Wednesday.
The restaurant, located at 7503 Youree Drive, Suite 500, in Regal Court shopping center, will be the couple’s second franchise. They also have Wingstop stores in Shreveport and Bossier City.
Scott Quiqley has been in the restaurant business for more than 20 years. A native of Shreveport, he moved back to his hometown about five years ago and took over the local Wingstop franchises in 2007. The Quigleys had previously operated several Subway restaurants in the Dallas area.
Question: How did you get started in the franchise business?
Answer: It was 22 years ago. I was right out of school. I moved to Dallas and opened up a Subway. We were blessed with a good location by (Southern Methodist University). When we sold the units in 2005, we had five locations. We were there for 17 years.
Q: Why franchise instead of starting a restaurant on your own?
A: There’s more stability. They have a corporate infrastructure to help out. I also always look for companies that have corporate-owned stores, so they know what we’re going through.
Q: Why did you decide to come back to Shreveport?
A: I just didn’t want to lose touch with my family. When you’re in the restaurant business, you spend so many hours with it that you neglect your family and loved ones. I actually wanted to come back five years before we did.
Q: How were you able to not only survive the recession, but also thrive during it?
A: I have three secrets. You need to sell a great quality product in a clean restaurant with great quality service. If you do those three things, you’ll be a winner in whatever you do.
Q: How did you get involved with Smashburger?
A: We came across the brand a few years ago. So we flew out there to meet with the CEO and corporate guys. We fell in love with the brand, and they thought the product would fit well in Shreveport.
We purchased the franchise in January of this year.
