Names To Know In 2010: New Jersey Smashburger / Battling Hunger In The Garden State

By: Black Tie and Flip Flops Blog

By now readers know that I am obsessed with Smashburger, a fast-casual “better burger” restaurant in Montclair, New Jersey. What they may not know is that Smashburger is working with the Community FoodBank of New Jersey to battle the problem of Hunger in the Garden State.

Nearly 1 in 5 New Jersey residents require some sort of food assistance throughout the year : these include the elderly, the disabled, the mentally challenged, and residents who now count themselves among the state’s unemployed. As with most charitable giving, the prime donation season is from Thanksgiving to New Years Day – but the need for food assistance programs is year round. That’s where Smashburger Montclair comes in with a great program for January.

Smashburger will donate $1 from every New Jersey Smashburger sold from January 16, 2010 to January 22, 2010 to help feed the hungry.

What’s great about a financial donation like this is that this leaves the opportunity to meet need with the Community FoodBank. Unlike, let’s say burgers, that have a finite shelf life, a financial gift like this can be used to meet the specific needs of the community. (And what makes it great for you the burger connoisseur is that the only thing you have to do is order from a menu!)

The “New Jersey Smashburger,” created especially for the Garden State, starts with 100-percent Angus beef topped with applewood smoked bacon, blue cheese crumbles, grilled and haystack onions, lettuce, tomato and mayo served on an onion roll.

Named for the cooking method used to create the perfect burger, Smashburgers start with a ball of 100% Angus beef —fresh, not frozen—smashed, seared and seasoned on a flat grill. It’s something you just have to experience, and if you are like me you will go back again, and again, and again!

Smashburger Montclair is located at 15 Bloomfield Ave Montclair NJ, right at the border of Glen Ridge, in the same commercial strip as Panera.
