New restaurant hopes to be ‘smash’ hit with burger lovers

Look out burger lovers, there’s a new kid in town.

Smashburger is new to Murfreesboro, but the franchise plans to take the area by storm, possibly bringing at least two more locations by next year. Once you get a bite of juicy, certified Angus beef on a plump egg roll and loaded with fresh produce you’ll understand why people are going nuts over the new restaurant.

“This is all about the burger,” said Greg Creighton, president of the Smashburger company. “We use only certified Angus beef. Only 8 percent of beef is certified Angus. We use artisan breads and fresh produce to give you the best burger possible.”

The idea is simple: Take a 100 percent beef meatball and put it on a 400 degree flat grill. Then, smash it into a patty, searing in the juicy flavor of a fresh, never frozen, burger.

“It’s the ‘smashing’ that really creates the magic,” said Murfreesboro store franchise owner Joseph Henry. “It creates a carmelization, searing in the flavor. Then we add our signature blend of seasoning to make a truly wonderful burger.”

The concept started in Denver, and in four years the franchise has expanded to 150 restaurants in 25 states. Soon to open are locations in Kuwait, Canada and Central America. The Murfreesboro store is the first of six Smashburger restaurants slated to open in the middle Tennessee area in the next two years.

Each franchise adds a little bit of local flair to the menu as well. The local store boasts a Tennessee Smashburger with Jack Daniels barbecue sauce.

“To celebrate our entrance to the Volunteer State, we created the Tennessee burger, combining the great tasting burger we’re known for with a barbecue sauce made by Jack Daniels, one of Tennessee’s most recognized brands,” said Tom Ryan, Smashburger Founder and CCO.

But more than just burgers, Smashburger has chicken options, salads, and sides such as sweet potato fries. You’ll also find made-to-order Haagen-Daas ice cream milkshakes.

The new Smashburger restaurant is located at 451 N. Thompson Lane. For more information, check out
