There was a band playing out in front of the new Smashburger location at Kirby and Main when I stopped by on Saturday. It was a radio station promotion for the modernistic burger stand’s grand opening celebration. Standing at the counter, I almost ordered the “Classic Smashburger” which is the first item on the menu. Then I noticed it had ketchup. So did the second item on the menu, the “All-American Smashburger.” Are they trying to tell us that mustard is un-American?
Finally, I ordered the third one down, “The Texas Smashburger” that came with the proper condiments–American cheese, mustard, lettuce, tomato, pickles, and onion on a toasted egg bun. I went with the half pound size. Smashburger offers some alluring additions including bacon, chili, mushrooms, guacamole and a fried egg. The 99 cent fried egg option was just too good to pass up. I also added jalapeños, which were free.
The burger came to the table with the top bun on the side. The condiments were placed around the crown bun with the raw jalapeño wheels upright and leaning against the tomato in an artful little arrangement. The jagged edges of the spatula-smashed ground meat patty gave the assembled sandwich an excellent crunchy texture. The meat was also very well seasoned. I wish the egg hadn’t been so well-done. Next time I’ll tell them I want it runny. I think I’ll add the bacon too.
Hamburger with bacon and eggs–sounds like brunch.
