Smashburger aims for big expansion by year’s end

Restaurant company Smashburger has announced plans to more than double its size in 2010. The company wants to open more than 60 stores around the country. Fifteen restaurants were opened in 11 markets in the first quarter of 2010, and by the end of the year, the company is aiming to have about 100 locations in more than 15 states.

Smashburger chairman and CEO David Prokupek said the company “enjoyed a very successful first fiscal quarter.” In addition to strong same-store sales, he said, “our franchise partners and leadership team have done an excellent job shepherding and facilitating growth and our product speaks for itself.”

The company recently appointed new executives to the positions of senior vice president of franchise operations, director of franchise sales and executive vice president of operations. Smashburger is also seeking senior leaders in a number of other areas, including franchise operations and franchise real estate, to support its growth.

Smashburger isn’t the only burger franchise to anticipate major expansion in the near future. Early this month, Beautiful Brands International announced the addition of Blazing Onion Burger Company to its restaurant portfolio. The company’s support system will be used to market and franchise the brand on a large scale.
