Smashburger is coming to the Twin Cities

The burger battles are heating up.

The Smashburger chain of fast-casual burger restaurants is planning to open its first Minnesota location. It is currently planned to open in May at 3900 Silver Lake Road in St. Anthony, northeast of downtown Minneapolis.

The chain serves Angus-beef burgers and is considered in the “better-burger” category that also includes chains such as In-N-Out Burger, Culver’s, and Five Guys, which is the fastest growing segment of the $100B burger market. Smashburger restaurants generally charge more than mass-market fast-food burger places. Smashburger’s average meal costs $8 to $9 and it gets most of its business from customers that would dine in.
The menu will also include their famous smash fries, haystack onions and veggie frites. Non-beef lovers have a choice of smashchicken sandwiches, salads and smashdogs.
Headquartered in Denver, Colo. Smashburger was developed and is owned by private equity and concept development firm Consumer Capital Partners, Smashburger will expand to 30 to 60 locations by the end of 2009 and ultimately grow to 500 locations in 30 markets.
