We, at the Tulsa Food Blog, love our burgers. We have made it our quest to find the absolute best burger in town. Last night we definitely found a new contender in the form of the new burger joint in the Hills Shopping Center, Smashburger.
We had the privilege of attending Smashburger’s pre-opening run. Smashburger is a quick-serve phenomenon, making a splash in the burger world with their 100% Angus meat, unique recipes and a fun atmosphere. The burger itself is the kind that you would expect from a sit down restaurant for a lower price. The quick serve style makes it easier to swing in on a lunch break. Named after the unique way the meat is smashed on the grill, Smashburger, opening soon to the public, is sure to be an instant hit in Tulsa.
We wanted to try everything and so we ordered 5 different kinds of burgers. The first one was the Oklahoma burger. This burger was a special design created by the founder Tom Ryan, specifically to reflect the local flavor. The Oklahoma burger is topped with fried pickles, pepper jack cheese, haystack onions, lettuce, tomato and buttermilk ranch dressing on an egg bun. This was one unbelievable burger. The toppings made it so tall that it nearly tripled in size from the other burgers we ordered.
The next burger we ordered was the BBQ, Bacon Cheeseburger. This burger was overflowing with BBQ sauce, applewood smoked bacon, cheese and haystack onions on an egg bun. It was excellent burger especially once it was slathered in the BBQ Sauce.
The Spicy Baja Burger was a really unique addition that I was glad to see on the menu. I love any burger that involves guacamole, pepper jack cheese and fresh jalapenos. This one was so much more though. It was pepper jack cheese, guacamole, lettuce, tomato, onion, chipotle mayonnaise and fresh jalapenos on a chipotle bun. This burger will leave your mouth tingling.
The Mushroom Swiss burger, was the most simplistic burger we ordered, however the flavors involved complimented each other perfectly. It was simply garlic sautéed mushrooms, Swiss cheese and mayo on an egg bun.
The final burger for the evening was one that the founder of Smashburger was raving about. This is not on the menu, however you can order it using their simple Create Your Own Burger Outline. This burger was a ½ pound patty with blue cheese, applewood bacon, haystack onions and mayonnaise on an egg bun. Perfect for all you blue cheese lovers out there!
The side items were also very notable. They have a signature fry called Smashfries, which are wonderful crispy fries tossed with rosemary, garlic, olive oil and other herbs to give a very unique taste to the fries. They also offer the noted fried pickles. The fired pickles that we had there are sure to convert non-pickle lovers. They also offer veggie frites which were flash fried asparagus spears, carrot sticks and green beans. They were a wonderfully fresh change of pace and were delicious.
They will soon be offering beers from local breweries. Our table was very excited by the fact that they have cherry coke. It is difficult, as I am sure all you cherry coke lovers out there know, to find cherry coke on tap. Smashburger gets major points from me, because nothing goes with a burger quite like a cherry coke.
Overall our experience at Smashburger was exemplary. The food was wonderful mixing the traditional with the unexpected to find a very unique burger experience. The service was good and the atmosphere was perfect for a little burger joint.
