Smashburger returns to metro Detroit with DTW location

A fast-casual burger joint touting its Certified Angus Beef burgers that are smashed on the grill to sear in juices has opened in Detroit Metropolitan Airport.
Smashburger debuted last Saturday, July 26, inside the McNamara Terminal’s Gate B19.
This is the Denver-based chain’s first Michigan location in years. In metro Detroit, Smashburger had a location that opened in 2011 on Orchard Lake Road in West Bloomfield. A Google search showed a location in Kalamazoo that closed around 10 years ago.
On the menu are Smashburger’s Classic Smash, All American Smash and Bacon Stack Smash. There’s also chicken sandwiches, a Veggie Smash option and chicken Caesar salad. Smashburger will also offer breakfast options, including breakfast sandwiches and its new grab-and-go breakfast wraps. Hours at DTW are 7 a.m.-9 p.m. daily.
Opening in DTW is part of Smashburger’s plans for “growth in travel hubs,” for those on the go, according to a press release.
"Detroit is a city with deep culture and energy, and we're proud to bring our bold, best-in-class burgers to its travelers," said Jim Sullivan, President at Smashburger, in a news release. "This opening reflects our commitment to making Smashburger more accessible in high-traffic, high-opportunity spaces like airports, arenas, and beyond."
Smashburger has more than 200 restaurants across 31 states and seven countries.This Smashburger location is in partnership with SSP America, a division of SSP Group, a food and beverage operator in worldwide travel locations.
Smashburger is one of the various new food, drink and retail options for travelers inside DTW’s McNamara Terminal. Recent openings include Delaware North partnerships with local companies. On Thursday, Born in Detroit Kitchen + Bar, which co-branded with Great Lakes Coffee Roasting Co., opened, offering food, beverage and retail offerings. Celebrity-backed Wahlburgers opens Monday, Aug. 4, along with a Detroit salad company, 7greens. In June, Valentine Distilling Co. and Detroit City Distillery teamed up to open Cask & Craft Local Spirits + Bites. Golf apparel store and clothing brand, Eastside Golf, is launching its first U.S. retail store inside the McNamara Terminal near Gate 34.
